We wish to create a "clean air island" in southern Mumbai, stretching from CST station in the north to Coloba in the south. We have developed a three pronged approach to urban renewal, which tackles the problem at its base. The first two aspects of the plan, vermiculture and the use of pollution free vehicles, deal directly with waste management and air quality, two major issues for an ever growing urban population. The third aspect of our plan, the greening of public roadways and footpaths, aids in air quality improvement, organic waste disposal through vermiculture and generally improves the appearance of the area and quality of life of the city's residents and visitors. We have identified simple ways in which urban rejuvenation can take place and even save the municipalities governing the areas a significant percentage of costs associated with waste management.
While direct action is neccessary to alleviate these problems, without public support and cooperation the projects can never succeed. Because of this, Clean Air Island has also focused on public awareness through environmental theatre, workshops, and the use of public awareness vehicles and approaching our projects through a social economy framework, involving slum dwellers and mega corporations in our actions. Helping alleviate poverty through environmentally sound employment opportunities and offering large companies ways to save costs while also helping save the environment.
If you would like information of sponsoring any of our projects, please contact us or fill out and send us a sponsorship form. all projects are available for full or partial sponsorship and sponsors names and logos will be prominently displayed in and around project area and on all Clean Air Island documents concerning the project.
From this Urban Management Program we have identified three smaller pilot programs which may be implemented seperately. These are:
DEVI
Different Experiments with Vermiculture Initiative
Clean Air Island has ben producing vermicompost in large amounts at the Colaba Pumping Station since 2000. This has enthused Clean Air Island to prepare a research project for evaluating the quantities and mix required of vermicompost with other growing mediums, to establish the optimum mix. Experiments set up are of 20 different mixes. These cover 5 species of ornamental plants with 5 replications of each plant in each experiment. A total of 500 plants is covered and the location of the nursery is at Colaba Pumping Station on land and facilities made available by BMC.
Gorai Dumping Grounds
The gorai dumping ground is one of the 4 dumping grounds in Mumbai, now having reached saturation point. Spread over a 100 acres of
land, originally largely mangrove area, it has all the toxins of Mumbai. It is now expected to be capped and used for drawing methane
gas for use. This makes an ideal place for renewal of this prime area with greening. This will help recycle the toxins over a period
of time and bring fresh air into Mumbai. The cycle of waste to compost to growth will have been completed. Clean Air Island has
already recieved part of the necessary funds from HSBC, who has promised to plant one tree for every customer who waives the hard
copy of their bank statement. The Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also provided assistance in reclaiming this land for
nature. The rejuvenation of the Gorai Dumping Ground is a good example of public and private institutions cooperating to help clean
up Mumbai's environment.
Enviro Spots on Dr. D.N. Road, Mumbai
Implemented in 2003, with help from the European Commission's Asia URBS project, the grening project on Dr, D.N. Road is designed to
beautify a large area of downtown Mumbai, while providing cleaner air through plant respiration. Further support is still needed for
maintenance of greening and for creation of more "enviro spots" along the road. Sponsor's names and logos will be prominently placed
along one of Mumbai's major thoroughfares.
